In India it is also known as “Chilgoza”, pine nuts are basically seeds extracted from pines.The Chilgoza pine, which grows to 25 metres in height with its distinct three-needle leaves, is botanically known as Pinus gerardiana. It is named after Captain Patrick Gerard, a British army official who discovered it while posted in the region in the 19th century.The slender Chilgoza seeds are highly nutritious and contain at least 10% to 34% protein depending on different pine species. They are also a good source of dietary fiber.
Pine Nuts Shell Recommendations For Storage
Pine nuts are grown in high altitude areas and therefore should be stored in extremely cool conditions (-5°c to 4°c), so storing in a air tight container in fridge is must in order to preserve their taste.
In shelled pine nuts have a longer life than their shelled counterparts. Pine Nuts should not be exposed or kept in warm or humid environment. Pine nuts deteriorate rapidly, becoming rancid within a few months in warm humid conditions.
They must not be exposed to strong and pungent odors.
Pine Nuts Shell Shelf Life
If frozen, pine nuts can last for a long duration on average being 3 to 4 months. However, if exposed to hot humid environment and not taken care of, their taste can deteriorate within a couple of days.
